Retail Unit
Definition
A completed and delivered vehicle sale used as the basis for F&I performance metrics.
Why It Matters
Retail unit is the denominator in all key F&I metrics (PRU, PVR, penetration rate). Understanding what counts as a retail unit is essential for accurate performance tracking.
Examples
- If a dealership sold 100 vehicles last month, they had 100 retail units
- Retail units exclude wholesale, fleet, and internal sales
Related Terms
PRU (Products Per Retail Unit)
The average number of F&I products sold per vehicle, calculated by dividing total products sold by total retail units delivered. A PRU of 2.0 means you are selling an average of 2 products per car.
PVR (Per Vehicle Retail)
The total average gross profit generated per retail unit, combining front-end and back-end income.
Penetration Rate
The percentage of customers who purchase a specific F&I product out of total retail units sold.
